Notes for 12.13.05

Sorry for the late update here, I've been busy with jury duty. Read about it on my main blog.

I decided to honor two people who died, Richard Pryor and Eugene McCarthy. I also finally played a block that I'd been planning for weeks. Then I played a bunch of random songs from my CMJ New Music Monthly collection. You can view the entire play list here.

Richard Pryor The first block is dedicated to Richard Pryor, who died Saturday, December 10, 2005. I'm sure you've read all the tribute articles that discussed his past, so I won't rehash it here. I picked up this box set when I worked at Wherehouse Music back in 2001-2002. A good friend of mine kept mentioning it to me. We got one in, but it sold, so I had to special order it. Every now and then one of the tracks will come up, and I'll have to stop what I'm doing to listen to it. He's got lots of funny stuff on it.

William Shatner The next block has only two songs in honor of Eugene McCarthy, who also died on Saturday, December 10, 2005. The first song I selected simply because the title has his last name in it. I'm sure R.E.M. was singing about Joseph McCarthy, but I chose to play it anyway. I had a hard time finding songs that were appropriate for Eugene McCarthy. He was against the war, and was a thorn in the side of whatever administration was in power, but I have no music that reflects that. I ended up picking Has Been simply because the song seemed to fit.

Gabe Dixon Band I call the third block, "They're not____, but they wanna be." There are 5 songs by 4 bands which sound like 4 other bands. The first two songs remind me of U2, but are actually Jibe and Headswim. The next two songs are by the Gabe Dixon Band, but one sounds like Ben Folds Five, and the other sounds like Billy Joel. The last song sounds like R.E.M., but is Five-Eight.

CMJ New Music Monthly The blocks from here on out were randomly picked by Windows Media Player. I set it on my CMJ New Music Monthly CD collection and just let it play. I've got 59 discs currently. For Christmas, my wife has given me a subscription so that I can grow it even more. I only let WMP chose the songs, not the order. I reordered the tracks to be a little more cohesive. The first block has 4 tracks that are kinda Ska/World type songs.

Willie Nelson This block of 6 songs starts off with three random songs, and finishes with three country songs, two of which are by Willie Nelson.

The Prodigy The last block of the show is all dance music, to some extent. It's amazing to me that Smack My Bitch Up is as old as it is. I've found that lots of dance music(or electronica or techno or whatever-you-want-to-call-it) is fairly timeless.

I ended the song with a DJ Irene track that I'd heard randomly earlier in the week prior to putting the show together, and wanted to use it just for the deep-voiced spoken part near the end.
