Notes for 01.03.06 show

I threw this show together rather quickly, because I was lazy over the New Year's weekend. I let Windows Media Player randomly select the music. You can view the entire play list here.

Jesus Jones - Doubt The first block of music this week was completely random. The first track was from a compilation produced a few years ago by local radio station The EDGE. They produced 11 volumes over the years, and I have all of them. The first volume is the hardest one to get, because they only produced 1000 of them, and sold them for 94 cents. The Jesus Jones track is actually one of my favorites.

David Bowie - Heathen The second block of music this week continued the randomosity of the first. It started off with a David Bowie track, and worked its way through New Wave (Depeche Mode), Hip Hop (Bomb the Bass), Punk (Noise Rachet), and an old Chicago song (Color My World), before ending up with a French-Canadian accordion band, Matapat. There are a few CDs that my wife and I have that we connect to specific things. Matapat is one because we first heard them at the First Annual International Accordion Festival in San Antonio in 2001. They were by far the most entertaining band, although the guy with the metal bar, butter knife and sparkly shirt was a close second.

Charlie Bucket - For A Rhyme The $1 CD Special made its return this week. I picked up this CD at Half Price Books a couple weeks ago. It's not a bad CD. They sound quite a bit like Barenaked Ladies. I rather like the first song in the block, Miranda. I like the fact that they use the Miranda Rights wording throughout the song.

Ozomatli - Street Signs Four songs continued immediately after the Charlie Bucket block. Again, just a random smattering from my collection. My wife heard an Ozomatli track a while back, and we went out and got this CD. It's pretty good. Not sure where I picked up the Huey Lewis & the News disc. It's not too bad, but not as good as Sports. Same thing with Deadeye Dick. I'm sure there was a reason I got it, but for the life of me, I can't remember why. Then there's Depeche Mode. I'm a huge fan of DM, and have a large collection of their songs.

Jill Sobule This penultimate block of songs is rather bizarre. I picked up Jill Sobule back when her song I Kissed A Girl was out. The entire disc is quirky. My wife is a huge fan of Weird Al, so we have pretty much everything he's ever done. I picked up the track by Isopod off of the website of a local free daily newspaper - Quick. They have a page for local bands to upload music for the public called the Juqbox. There are quite a few decent bands there, along with some crappy ones.

William Shatner - Has Been I started off the last block with some harder stuff. Hatebreed, off the XXX soundtrack, a 2 Pac track, and a Baby S track. I got the Baby S CD for free when I worked for a CD store. A friend gave me the 2 Pac disc. I have no idea where I got the ATO Records sampler that Jem's song is on. I actually found the Arrested Development CD in the trash at the loft building I used to live in. I've found all kinds of good shit in the trash. Just last Friday night my wife and I found a nice microwave stand in the trash. It was missing a couple of shelf mounts, but there was a bracket on it that we weren't going to be using, so I took the mounts from it, and sued them on the shelves, and it's nice and solid. Our microwave is no longer sitting on the floor. Pop Muzik just came up randomly, so it seemed like as good a song as any with which to end the show. Then I remembered I didn't have any Shatner last week, so I dug up this track, which he does with Ben Folds on piano. I have one more Shatner track that I haven't played, but it's rather depressing, so I'm not sure when I'll play it. We'll just have to see.
