Notes for 01.10.06 show

Yeah, I know, my breaks sucked ass. I was trying a technique I picked up in a book of tips for podcasting. They recommended holding the microphone above and to the side of one's mouth to avoid breathy passages. Yeah, it didn't work as well as the technique I've been using. Anyway, I've always felt that my shows were more about the music and less about me talking. So let's move on to the music. You can view the entire play list here.

The Cars - Door to Door I wanted to start off the show with Hello Again by The Cars off of Heartbeat City, but I'm having problems with my cassette deck and couldn't get it converted, so I settled for Strap Me In instead. This was the one song that I picked for the show, all the others were selected by Windows Media Player. And I didn't even reorder them like I usually do. I've found that my player is selecting better songs more frequently lately. It used to repeat some quite often (and yes, I have the Repeat function disabled). The first song selected was Bye Bye Baby OK Go. I really like this band. They're happy and upbeat. I've played a few songs of theirs before (at least one, at any rate), and will be playing more from them in the future. I got the CD for free when I worked for a music retailer a few years back. I always liked watching The Muppet Show as a kid. I never got into the movies, though, and I don't like Kermit or Miss Piggy. One of my favorite bits was Manah Manah. I don't remember why I picked up Guadalcanal Diary's CD. I rarely listen to it. The Wall of Voodoo disc I got because I really like Stan Ridgway's music, especially his cover of Ring of Fire. I really like Erasure's cover of Too Darn Hot, I'm glad it came up randomly. I actually have two Uncle Kracker CDs. They're not too bad, kinda country-rap. To me he kinda sounds like a white Tone-Loc. Switchblade Symphony came up, so it got played.

Swing Out Sister - It's Better To Travel I picked up Swing Out Sister's disc in LA back in the late-80s, mainly because of the first track - Breakout. It's got a happy jazzy feel to it. Schnell Fenster was one of those discs I picked up in the 80s & 90s because of one song, and ended up liking the entire disc. Queens of the Stone Age, on the other hand, was another freebie from the music store. I've got quite a few discs from the store that I've never heard even one track from. Filter, another freebie, actually comes up twice in the show. They're not quite my favorite music, but they're not bad. The Corrs are a family band. The three women in it are incredibly hot. And check it out, I played a song by EMF, and it wasn't Unbelievable!

Cooly's Hot Box - Take It Skipping ahead, Cooly's Hot Box is another freebie, but this one I got by choice. They are one of those bands that I discovered through the beauty of the Promo CD. The labels give free CDs to the music stores so we can play them and help drum up interest in the artist. OK Go was one of those, as were Quarashi, Peace Orchestra, Lamya, and a bunch of others that I've played, or will play soon. The free CDs and cheap DVDs are about the only thing I miss about working there. The track by Roberto Perera is off of some random disc I have. Then there's Jill Sobule, that quirky songstress.

Matt Bianco - Indigo I bought Indigo after attending a party thrown by the gay best friend of a woman I dated in LA. He played the disc, and I really liked a couple of songs on it. Apparently his copy disappeared during the party, and he suspected that I took it, but I didn't. I legitimately purchased my copy. I got this Debbie Harry song of Just Say Da. I like compilation CDs. It's a good way to discover new artists. Or rediscover old ones. Which brings me to the next artist: The Ocean Blue

The Ocean Blue - Cerulean I discovered The Ocean Blue from the Just Say Yes series. I liked them so much, I bought the CD. That was back in the late-80s, which is why they sound like a late-80s band. I picked up Alien Ant Farm simply because I liked their cover of Smooth Criminal. The rest of the disc isn't too bad, either. I went through a phase where I bought CDs of artists that I thought I was supposed to like. Artists like R.E.M., U2, and Dave Matthews Band are just three examples. I bought the CDs, listened to them, decided I didn't like them, and never listened again. Until now. Some of it I actually like. Some I could do without. But I'll hang on to the discs, because one never knows when they'll come in handy.

That's all for this show. I've still got a couple $1 CD Specials coming up, so stay tuned for those. I'm also going to try a different recording technique for the show on the 24th - I'm going to record a little bit every day, so I'm not up until 4am the morning my show airs. It sucks only getting 4 hours sleep and having to work around noisy equipment all day, and then getting up at 6 the next morning to do laundry. We'll see if it works any better.
